He has been writing about the game and its history since he was a schoolboy.

David completed Rugby League Week’s Book of Records, which comprised the playing details of every Australian representative since 1908, during his final year of school, and in the years following, continued to indulge his passion in learning about the game’s history.

He worked as a journalist and feature writer for Rugby League Week before establishing his own information agency, League Information Services in 1992.

David was appointed as Channel Nine’s rugby league statistician in 1997, providing in-depth historical information, profile data and statistical analysis to the news and commentary teams.

Middleton has worked on numerous publications, including A Century of Rugby League, the Official Centenary History of Rugby League with Ian Heads; From Where the Sun Rises, the History of the Sydney Roosters (with Ian Heads and Geoff Armstrong); 14 Years of Steel, the History of the Illawarra Steelers; Rugby League Week 25 Sensational Years, and Laurie: Always A Winner (with Laurie Daley).
